Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist, IMD
All ASTCI positions require satisfactory completion of a federal and state criminal background check through LiveScan and the CA DOJ, and US DOJ. In addition, in accordance with Title IX regulations governing mental health hospitals, all employees must also complete a post-hire physical, physical abilities testing (specific to position), drug/alcohol screening, and TB testing, plus verification of educational credentials through a certified transcript.
Alpine Special Treatment Center is a locked mental health rehabilitation and transitional care facility located 35 miles east of downtown San Diego. We provide care to voluntary and involuntary adults with acute psychiatric symptoms and co-occurring disorders. The facility houses approximately 100 clients, most of whom are on conservatorship for grave disability. Alpine Special Treatment Center is open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
The Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist (MHRS) is a “lead” position, working closely with clients in a direct-care, team-based environment on the secure dual-diagnosis units or in an unlocked transitional living setting, to provide daily care to clients residing at the facility, and providing leadership and direction to Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Specialists (PSRS) on the units.
Each MHRS maintains a caseload of clients which they follow from admission to discharge. The MHRSs complete clinical documentation, assists with implementation of clinical interventions, and participates in an inter-disciplinary treatment team for the clients on their caseload. The MHRSs also facilitate psychoeducational groups for the clients at the facility. Each MHRS is also responsible for ensuring the implementation of client behavior plans/appropriate interventions established by the Clinical Team, engaging in crisis intervention when required, and ensuring consistently high quality of client care to the adult dual-diagnosis population served. All MHRSs are required to complete crisis prevention/intervention training (ProACT) within the first 90 days of employment.
In addition to the clinical responsibilities, the MHRSs are responsible for leading the floor during their shifts. The ability to implement case plans through good professional judgment while maintaining a team approach is essential to success in this busy, rewarding role. Crisis intervention and client de-escalation skills are also a plus! An MHRS ensures proper monitoring of clients, that all tasks for completed by Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialists (PSRS), and that client and staff safety are maintained on an ongoing basis. Additionally, each MHRS provides monthly supervision and training to direct care staff. The MHRS is the designated programmatic “lead” on the unit. We currently have openings on the PM shift (3:00–11:30pm), but schedules at ASTCI are subject to change, based upon the needs of the facility and our clients, and all employees are expected to remain flexible as needs change.

– M.A. or M.S in psychology or related field plus a minimum of 1 year experience in mental health
– Current CPR certification (AHA AED/BLS/Healthcare Provider)
– ProAct Certification (provided by the facility within first 90 days of employment)
– Leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred
– Flexibility in a facility that is open 365/24/7 is required.
